Whiteroom, a Montreal band headed by Alex Dray and Eddy Silva, is attracting much attention thanks to a well-orchestrated series of tracks that swing between many moods, with an undeniable fascination for the sulky laments of Thom Yorke & co (Radiohead). The songs on this album are similar in style, yet each is unique in sound – giving a musical variety that together flow flawlessly as one album.

The first track on this album is “Pampillions”, the epitome of what Whiteroom calls their genre, “Neo-Romantic pop”; indie rock that moves seamlessly between urban beats, Latin jazz, romantic cinema soundscapes and haunting trip-hop. The melting pot of these genres is complex, intelligent and emotional yet still fun.

“Barrio Chino,” is the only Portuguese track on the album with a very lulling romantic guitar, adding a nice spice to the album…not like its needed! This track may be lyrically different but its underlying style is followed throughout Whiteroom. If you’re surprised by the lingo change, just wait! “At Odds”, the fourth track on Whiteroom, is a mix of French and English lyrics, giving a surprisingly sophisticated feel to an indie song.

One specific track that catches our attention here at BeatPick is “Barcelona”, a tribute to John Lennon’s “When I’m 64”. This track captures exactly the atmosphere of the song it tributes and includes a magnificent trumpet solo. It’s quite unusual to find a band that has the courage to tribute the Beatles’ more complex, orchestral, Sgt. Pepper-phase works within an indie-produced debut album. Just one of many reasons why WhiteRoom’s album is a surprising and an ambitious piece of work.

With a firm grasp of classic song-writing, this album has a sense of dream-like storytelling that captures many moods. It’s as if Whiteroom had no trouble emulating each genus and matching it with its lyrically poetic counterpart and mashing them together. The band has recently been playing various clubs in their home area and if there’s any divine justice in the world, WhiteRoom will be the Next Big Thing to emerge from Canada. So keep an eye out and an ear! Be the first in the know, hear it here!

trio_cover.pngIm Anita, a jazz trio from Italy (Mattia Borraccetti, Maurizio Diomedi, Matteo Ciminari), have put together Trio, an album with a comic edge. In 2005, Im Anita were finalists at the fourth International Festival of Silent Cinema set to live music, composing and interpreting the soundtrack of the film “A woman” by Charlie Chaplin. It’s clear that Im Anita do wonders with their skills in theatrical representations; each track in this album has a life of its own so forget narrative!

The first track on the album “Plantinga”, is a more tranquil instrumental then the rest of the album but still carries a fun vibe with a funky guitar mid track. “Le Voyage Dans La Luna”, assuming the track is named for George Melies 1902 film A trip to the Moon, is well titled. Just listening to this track feels as if you’re being entertained by a sad and funny clown in outer space (weird example I know but so true!). It’s Slapstick all the way with this track. There are great samples added in and a drum solo for suspense, really making it seem as if we are watching a trapeze act- even more so when an applause sample finishes off the track. Not every track holds a fun vibe, “Domenico N8”, is the only jazz ambient track on the album. The percussion and guitar are gentle and have a slight ethnic feel to it, giving some variety to Trio.

Im Anita has a lot more going for them besides just this album. In 2001, they created a project known as MMM Flying Studios, an experimental traveling recording studio which aims to ‘immortalize musicians’ works and the sounds of the most varied social contexts, a project that they continue today. Creative projects like the MMM Flying Studios really show how important music and art are for these three artists. Creative and professional, this jazz trio are flawless in my eyes and their album Trio is flawless to my ears. Listen and be entertained by Trio, here at BeatPick.com!

Surrogate Lovers, the latest record by Sharif, is a phenomenal pop rock album with beautifully and poetically written lyrics. Im amazed at how easily Sharif can express himself instrumentally, lyrically and vocally.

sharif.jpg

Tracks like “You Are My Girl” and “Surrogate Lovers”, are upbeat optimistic songs of love and life that sounds similar to “Ill Be There for You” by the Rembrants or better known as the famous theme song for the show Friends. In fact, this entire album would be great tracks for comedy or drama TV series. One of my favourite tracks on this album is “Sweet Angel”, a song with a softer side to Sharif’s pop style with a taste of country love guitar twang and piano. Sharif’s innovative sound truly makes this a CD worthy of weeks on repeat in your stereo; I just hope your speakers are just as worthy! Paradise”, track number nine, has an ethnic feel with a strong guitar presence that’s simply irresistibly charming.

Overall, I can’t seem to find one track on this album that I dislike, and neither can my colleagues (which is rare considering how picky Beat Pickers are)! Each track is lyrically smart with attractive vocals to match, (not to mention the fact that Sharif is unbelievably handsome- the next Bon Jovi or Bryan Adams). Sharif’s confidence is literally bursting from this album and I bet if Elliot Smith were alive today they would have had much to collaborate on. Currently, Sharif is working on a new record that us Beat Pickers can’t wait to get our hands on. If the next album is anything like Surrogate Lovers, it will be far far FAR! from disappointing. Check Surrogate Lovers here at BeatPick.com and be amazed for yourself!

When it comes to intelligent dance music, artists that usually come to mind are Aphex Twins or Autechre. Well… they used to come to mind, but now all I can think about is JFrank! Not only is JFrank co-founder of BrainStorm.org, a network of collaborating artists (among whom are designers, video and music makers) and a space on which to host the work produced, but JFrank is also the artist behind the Album of the Week here at BeatPick.com. JFrank’s album, which is one of many, JFrank06, is full of squelched beats, jagged synth lines, static washes, electrical shorts and weird sounds to match, making JFrank06 the epitome of IDM.

jfrank06.jpg

JFrank06 is intelligently produced and stimulates more than just the body, but the mind as well. The tempos on this album navigate a complicated musical landscape, each work gradually and effortlessly kicking it up a notch. The track “Sacrifice for the Company” has an oriental feel and is much calmer compared to the other creations on this album, not the stereotypical IDM but beautifully done non-the-less. I can imagine “Sacrifice for the Company” in the soundtrack for Kill Bill… to bad Tarintino missed out! “Stampede”, the sixth track on JFrank06, has high-tech and sci-fi written all over it. This tracks’ combination of synth, static washes and odd sounds are something to marvel at, it’s as if this track knows how intelligent it truly is; stating “Don’t Dance-Listen. I’am Intelligent Dance Music!”

JFrank defies rhythmic convention so seamlessly that it would be a shame not to hear this new talent amongst the chaos of the music world. Even his live performances are something to see, especially since he sports a frightening wolf mask on-stage, something that makes us BeatPickers love him even more! All in all, JFrank is the whole package and more. The album in its entirety is extremely creative and worth the listen and deserves respect! So give a little R.E.S.P.E.C.T., and listen to JFrank06 here at BeatPick!

Steve Booke has been teaching both acoustic and electric guitar for over 18 years, during which he has had various opportunities to participate in many guitar tribute albums for artists like Jason Becker, Jeff Beck and Carlos Santana. Some of which were featured on MTV and VH-1.

stevebookepicture2.jpg

Devotion, an album entirely inspired by the viewing of Mel Gibsons, “Passion of Christ”, is full of magnificent acoustic guitar playing, and features ethnic percussions and occasional vocal interventions. This album is very spiritual and comes straight from the author’s heart and religious convictions. The first track on the album is “Transgression”, a bittersweet guitar tune with rhythmic bongos. The guitar gives off a profound sense of passion that tells a story of its own. Beautiful yet sad, this track makes my imagination bloom. Another favorite on this album is “A Mother’s Broken Heart”, Steve Bookes portrayal of Mary’s grief over Jesus, a track well titled. The gradual entrance of a solo acoustic guitar plays as if the chords are spoken words of a woman’s sorrow. A brilliant track to sit and reflect to.

Over all, this album is a powerful compilation of Steve Booke’s talent. Each track has an amazing emotional hold on any one who listens. If you love acoustic guitar and are in need of some healing powers, than this is just the album for you. So hear Devotion here first, at Beatpick.com!

Striking Media Music is one of BeatPicks newest artists who have a lot to offer the music industry. Striking Media Music is a partnership that was created in February of 2007 by Dan Cullen and Deryn Cullen. Dan and Deryn have over twenty years experience in music, offering decades of experience in the areas of musical composition, performance and education. Both are involved in many projects including creating compositions for Mica Films, and are currently composing music for the soundtrack of a sci-fi film that will be released October of this year.

ddstriking22.jpgStriking Media Music’s latest album, Beanstalk Suite, is a beautiful compilation of classical symphonic and contemporary orchestra music.

Each instrumental ensemble offers a variety of emotions- each mood changing with striking transitions that remind me of another BeatPick artist, Demetrios Katis. Beanstalk’s first track, “Phee” is full of suspense and drama, making this piece of work epic and powerful and certainly unforgettable. This track is perfect for the ‘big screen’ and will certainly give listeners a sense of awe. One of my favourite tracks on the album is “Phi”, a dramatic score full of piano ups and downs with empowering climactic points. Every time I hear “Phi” I think of a frenzy circus show full of chaotic events, beautiful costumes and a theatrical tragedy happening on stage. “Phi” is absolutely brilliant.

“Phum”, the last track on the album, is dark and dangerous classic contemporary that sounds similar to Shostakovich. If Alfred Hitchcock was alive today there is no doubt in my mind that this track would be implemented into one of his famous horror mystery flicks. It gives me goose bumps just listening to it.

On that note, Phee Phi Pho Phum- if you don’t listen to this album then you are dumb! OK you’re not dumb but you’d certainly be missing out on an amazing creation. The talent behind Beanstalk Suite is striking and worth the listen. It’s no wonder that Dan and Deryn call themselves Striking Media Music! Listen to Beanstalk Suite here, at BeatPick.com.

It’s great to hear the hundreds of music submissions from brand new artists, but it’s even better when BeatPick gets a submission like Jamie K Crawford, a new artist who is out-of-this-world talented. jamie_k_cover.jpg

Jamie is a classically trained pianist, soulful vocalist and a wonderful song writer. Her self titled album Jamie K, brings all three of these talents into a beautiful piece of work. Jamie K is full of sultry vocals and classy beats making this album perfect for any cool lounge.

Throughout the album the piano’s strong presence compliments Jamie’s soulful vocals. Songs like “Dare to Dream” and “Broken keys”, are two of Jamie K’s strongest tracks. “Dare to Dream” is about Jamie’s new found passion for her music and talent, something that she had almost lost faith in years ago. Sincere and real, this track really delivers emotion and reminds us BeatPickers of Tori Amos. “Broken Keys” has a more serious and cool beat, accompanied by a beautiful violin and piano entrance. Lyrically, this track gets two thumbs up, three thumbs if I had a third! Another favourite on this album is “Love’s Mistake”. This track is much more R&B and less soft-pop and makes me think of Alicia Keys. On this track Jamie pushes a higher note and a faster beat which subtlety shows off her vocal range.

When asked her thoughts on her music Jamie said, “I’m finally in the place I’ve always wanted my music to be. I feel like my current musical vision is crafted in the new album. I want all of the listener’s senses to be engaged in the experience of the music. My time is coming and I am excited for the world to listen.” It’s no doubt that the powerful tracks on Jamie K are going to make her musical vision come to life and make this album a success. Want to brighten up your day- then take a break with Jamie K, here at BeatPick.com.

If you love the Chemical Brothers, Nax_Acid or Daft Punk then you’ll love Alessandro Dal Cin and Marco Dal Cin a.k.a Egocentrix. Egocentrix is an amazing electronic duo from Milan, Italy. Their music is upbeat electronic dance music that spits out energy – sending everyone on the dance floor positive vibes.

Their album, Inner Structure, is full of crazy beats woven together flawlessly, making this album one of my top favorites here at BeatPick.com. Their first track, “Street Samurai”, is right up there with The Chemical Brothers. It’s fast pace tempo, amazing beats and samples are arranged in such a way that you can’t help but let it hold your limbs hostage and make you break dance. The beats on this album are so professionally done that it seems as if Egocentrix produced these tracks effortlessly.

“Boho Dance”, the second track on Egocentrix’s album, reminds me of Daft Punk’s style with an amazing ability to skew vocals without over shadowing the beats. Exciting, fun and optimistic, this track will only leave you with a smile and a feeling of invincibility on the dance floor. Its no wonder that this invincible duo call them selves Egocentrix, because Inner Structure is truly a work of art! Listen to Inner Structure right here at BeatPick.com!

izm_photo2.jpgLike most producers, Joe Preston a.k.a IZM, started out DJing electronic music and progressed into other genres and styles, eventually leading him into producing hip-hop. IZM’s talent has kept him in the game for over a decade and he has worked with a variety of different artists like Mac Mall, Butthole Surfers and Peaches. When describing his music IZM created his own genre, stating that his music is, “Music to make you think and dance to; Ghetto Electronic”. He couldn’t have picked a better title for his style! IZM’s collection of “Ghetto Electronic” music can be heard on his album Long Overdue.

Long Overdue features different MC’s mirroring such artists like Snoop dogg and Dr. Dre with explicit lyrics and an attitude to match. The combination of turntables, samplers, computers and smart lyrics, gives his work a tough street drum and bass with an extra bling of electronic sound not normally found in hip-hop. A perfect example of IZM’s style is his remix of “Pushback”, which has a stronger electronic side than his original “Pushback” track, both featuring the artists Shaya and MGK . The original “Pushback” is smooth, with a medium slow tempo and a dash of modern beats, making this track attractively cool. The remix has an upbeat and slight funk to it, you could say that its been ‘electronically pimped-out’, something that Snoop Dogg himself would bark at.

A refreshing sound on the album is “Doing My Thang”, with vocal rap done by Bhold. This poppy hip-hop track reminds us Beatpickers of Biggie Smalls “Hypnotize”. The vocals and classy feeling you get when hearing this track makes it easy to see that Bhold and IZM are a winning combination. Other favorites on this album are “Soldier’s March” and “Understand Why”, both lyrically and instrumentally strong.

Long Overdue shows the versatility and expertise of IZM’s cross-genre production, with subtle electronic sound to truly compliment traditional hip-hop beats. The amazing talents involved in making this compilation cannot be ignored! Both IZM and the artists involved in the tracks, Bhold, Shaya, MGK, Brovabey, T.O.C. and Xpert bring something new to the worn-out table of hip-hop, making this album the pick of the month. Hear it for yourself, right here at Beatpick.com!

Demetrios Katis was born in Athens, Greece and has been composing songs for over twenty years. Since the age of 17, Demetrios has proven his talent through many awards for his historically driven sound and has been published in London, the U.K. and the Netherlands.

Epic Scores, is a compilation of Demetrios’s best tracks; each track offering a haunting, mysterious and enchanting soundtrack to historical battles, mythological stories, past emperors and more. Each score is composed through a dramatically brilliant orchestra that’s full of emotion and imagination that is woven with an intensity that cannot be ignored. The President of the Greek Parliament, Mr. Kaklamanis, publicly acclaimed Demetrios for his work and the board of directors of the educational institute in Athens have unanimously approved one of Demetris’ albums, Blazing March, to be included as part of the high school curriculum in music. There is no greater acknowledgment than to be used in a teaching curriculum for thousands of students, making this one of many reasons why BeatPick is proud to post Demetrios Katis on our site.

Demetrios Katis’s continues to create rich orchestral symphonic tunes of mythological and historical music. His intense passion for his work has led to many projects, not only with major film music libraries, but even taking him as far as producing and presenting his own radio programme “The Dance of the Danas,” on “Athens 9.84 FM”. Epic Scores is emotionally stimulating and is an album that will motivate and enchant your thoughts, listen here, at BeatPick.com.
